Kathryn Weaver heads up Lewis
Silkin’s Hong Kong employment practice. Kathryn Weaver, Managing Partner of
Lewis Silkin’s Hong Kong office is one of our expert speakers who presents an
important topic on our platform: Employment Law Overview.
Tell us about
yourself: What is your expertise, and how did you become an expert in the
area?
I am a dual-qualified (Hong Kong and
England & Wales) employment lawyer with over 10 years of specialist
experience, and I am also the head of the Hong Kong office for Lewis Silkin.
I advise employers and senior
executives on all aspects of Hong Kong and England & Wales’s employment law
and act for a mixture of listed companies, household-name brands, gig economy
clients and start-ups. Our Hong Kong practice covers employment,
immigration, data privacy, and employment tax and share schemes, and is
recognized in Chambers, Legal 500 and Who’s Who Legal.
I decided to become an employment law
specialist during the global financial crisis as, at that time, businesses and
individuals greatly needed legal assistance with the impact of the crisis on
their workforce and livelihoods. I enjoy guiding companies and
individuals through complex employment situations.
Online training in
the legal industry is relatively new in Hong Kong – why did you take a chance
and become a speaker for Legal Beagle?
With legal
professionals who require CPD accreditation
being constantly pushed for time to fit in training along with budget pressure,
having an online legal training provider who can make training as convenient
and affordable as possible is a great resource for the industry. Legal Beagle
is a fresh platform providing that service, and I was happy to come onboard as
a speaker.
Why is/are the
topic(s) you speak on (featured on the Legal Beagle platform) so important?

| Employment Law Overview |
Employment is an area of law that is important to all businesses as people are usually a company’s greatest asset. Having a solid overall understanding of the Employment and Discrimination Ordinances of Hong Kong is essential for any in-house lawyer dealing with employment matters.
Employment law is also an area that is constantly developing through changes to legislation and case law.
In FY20 alone we saw exciting legal changes in Hong Kong in the area of same-sex immigration, employment and tax rights, workplaces had to consider complicated issues regarding time off work and data privacy relating to the Hong Kong protests and now further employment law issues are arising relating to holiday, reduction in pay and redundancies due to the Covid-19 health crisis.
In-house lawyers should ensure they are aware of these developments in order to advise their companies accordingly.
Are there any articles you’d like to share that you have published online, or that would be helpful to lawyers taking your course?
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
In recent years, women’s experience in the workplace has come under the spotlight globally and I am passionate about dealing with and driving a positive change in culture around sexual harassment.
Positive mental well-being is another employment topic I feel strongly about, given the disturbing statistics coming out of recent reports into mental health.
I regularly speak on these issues as well as provide softer non-legal training to organizations to support them in making positive changes for their employees.
